Exciting Summer of Learning and Collaboration for TuttleLab Member

This July was an action-packed month of learning and collaboration for one of our TuttleLab members, Raj Kumar. From attending a prestigious machine learning summer school to participating in an innovative residency program, it was a summer full of growth and new ideas.

OxML Summer School on Health and Bio

From July 6-9, Raj travelled to Oxford University to attend the OxML Summer School focused on machine learning applications in health and biology. The intensive 4-day program featured lectures from world-renowned researchers on cutting-edge ML topics like:

– Advanced representation learning and generative AI

– Geometrical deep learning

– Knowledge graphs and neuro-symbolic ML

It was an invaluable opportunity to learn about the latest ML techniques being applied to pressing healthcare and biological challenges.

HEAD Residency Program

Following the summer school, Raj participated in the Health Equity in AI Decision (HEAD) Residency Program from July 12-19 in the picturesque village of Matlock Bath. This unique program brought together ~15 early career researchers to collaborate on projects addressing healthcare technology access disparities.

The week-long residency included:

– Sharing research themes and ideation workshops

– Project development clinics

– Workshops on responsible research practices and legal considerations

– Preparing and presenting project pitches to external reviewers

Raj contributed to the “Serenity Sense” project, developing an AI-based ambient assistive ecosystem to monitor long-term health of older adults. The interdisciplinary team designed an innovative system combining sensors, wearables, and a conversational interface to support aging in place.

These summer experiences provided invaluable opportunities for Raj to expand his knowledge, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of ML and healthcare. We’re excited to see how these new skills and connections will enhance our lab’s work going forward!
